1. We investigated diurnal nitrate (NO3) concentration variability in the San Joaquin River using an in situ optical NO3 sensor and discrete sampling during a 5‐day summer period characterized by high algal productivity. Dual NO3 isotopes (δ15NNO3 and δ18ONO3) and dissolved oxygen isotopes (δ18ODO) were measured over 2 days to assess NO3 sources and biogeochemical controls over diurnal time‐scales. 2. Concerted temporal patterns of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations and δ18ODO were consistent with photosynthesis, respiration and atmospheric O2 exchange, providing evidence of diurnal biological processes independent of river discharge. 3. Surface water NO3 concentrations varied by up to 22% over a single diurnal cycle and up to 31% over the 5‐day study, but did not reveal concerted diurnal patterns at a frequency comparable to DO concentrations. The decoupling of δ15NNO3 and δ18ONO3 isotopes suggests that algal assimilation and denitrification are not major processes controlling diurnal NO3 variability in the San Joaquin River during the study. The lack of a clear explanation for NO3 variability likely reflects a combination of riverine biological processes and time‐varying physical transport of NO3 from upstream agricultural drains to the mainstem San Joaquin River. 4. The application of an in situ optical NO3 sensor along with discrete samples provides a view into the fine temporal structure of hydrochemical data and may allow for greater accuracy in pollution assessment.  相似文献

Data analysis in phylogeographic investigations is typically conducted in either a qualitative manner, or alternatively via the testing of null hypotheses. The former, where inferences about population processes are derived from geographical patterns of genetic variation, may be subject to confirmation bias and prone to overinterpretation. Testing the predictions of null hypotheses is arguably less prone to bias than qualitative approaches, but only if the tested hypotheses are biologically meaningful. As it is difficult to know a priori if this is the case, there is the general need for additional methodological approaches in phylogeographic research. Here, we explore an alternative method for analysing phylogeographic data that utilizes information theory to quantify the probability of multiple hypotheses given the data. We accomplish this by augmenting the model‐selection procedure implemented in ima with calculations of Akaike Information Criterion scores and model probabilities. We generate a ranking of 17 models each representing a set of historical evolutionary processes that may have contributed to the evolution of Plethodon idahoensis, and then quantify the relative strength of support for each hypothesis given the data using metrics borrowed from information theory. Our results suggest that two models have high probability given the data. Each of these models includes population divergence and estimates of ancestral θ that differ from estimates of descendent θ, inferences consistent with prior work in this system. However, the models disagree in that one includes migration as a parameter and one does not, suggesting that there are two regions of parameter space that produce model likelihoods that are similar in magnitude given our data. Results of a simulation study suggest that when data are simulated with migration, most of the optimal models include migration as a parameter, and further that when all of the shared polymorphism results from incomplete lineage sorting, most of the optimal models do not. The results could also indicate a lack of precision, which may be a product of the amount of data that we have collected. In any case, the information‐theoretic metrics that we have applied to the analysis of our data are statistically rigorous, as are hypothesis‐testing approaches, but move beyond the ‘reject/fail to reject’ dichotomy of conventional hypothesis testing in a manner that provides considerably more flexibility to researchers.  相似文献

The rich Deseadan fauna from the locality of Salla Luribay (Bolivia) documents the last occurrence of archaeohyracids, a poorly known group of small typotherian notoungulates. Exceptionally, archaeohyracid remains are extremely abundant in the Salla deposits and are assigned to a single new species Archaeohyrax suniensis sp. nov . The anatomy of the new taxon is presented and the ontogeny of the cheek teeth is described. Archaeohyrax patagonicus Ameghino, 1897 from the Deseadan of Patagonia is also redescribed and compared with the new Bolivian species. Additionally, juvenile teeth of Sallatherium altiplanense (Hegetotheriidae) are described because they provide crucial phylogenetic information for understanding the phylogeny of archaeohyracids. A cladistic analysis performed on archaeohyracids and hegetotheriids supports for the first time the existence of a clade of late archaeohyracids (post‐Mustersan), which is the sister taxon of all hegetotheriids. It also argues for the origin of mesotheriids within archaeohyracids and for the existence of a hegetotheriine clade. These conclusions fit well with temporal data known for each taxa. Nevertheless, the present analysis also underlines the fact that the lack of data concerning the cranial anatomy of many archaeohyracids (Eohyrax, Pseudhyrax, Archaeotypotherium, Protarchaeohyrax) weakens the phylogenetic signal. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 155 , 458–509.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships within the bee family Megachilidae are poorly understood. The monophyly of the subfamily Fideliinae is questionable, the relationships among the tribes and subtribes in the subfamily Megachilinae are unknown, and some extant genera cannot be placed with certainty at the tribal level. Using a cladistic analysis of adult external morphological characters, we explore the relationships of the eight tribes and two subtribes currently recognised in Megachilidae. Our dataset included 80% of the extant generic‐level diversity, representatives of all fossil taxa, and was analysed using parsimony. We employed 200 characters and selected 7 outgroups and 72 ingroup species of 60 genera, plus 7 species of 4 extinct genera from Baltic amber. Our analysis shows that Fideliinae and the tribes Anthidiini and Osmiini of Megachilinae are paraphyletic; it supports the monophyly of Megachilinae, including the extinct taxa, and the sister group relationship of Lithurgini to the remaining megachilines. The Sub‐Saharan genus Aspidosmia, a rare group with a mixture of osmiine and anthidiine features, is herein removed from Anthidiini and placed in its own tribe, Aspidosmiini, new tribe . Protolithurgini is the sister of Lithurgini, both placed herein in the subfamily Lithurginae; the other extinct taxa, Glyptapina and Ctenoplectrellina, are more basally related among Megachilinae than Osmiini, near Aspidosmia, and are herein treated at the tribal level. Noteriades, a genus presently in the Osmiini, is herein transferred to the Megachilini. Thus, we recognise four subfamilies (Fideliinae, Pararhophitinae, Lithurginae and Megachilinae) and nine tribes in Megachilidae. We briefly discuss the evolutionary history and biogeography of the family, present alternative classifications, and provide a revised key to the extant tribes of Megachilinae.  相似文献

Hyaluronate turnover is correlated with morphogenetic eventsduring chondrogenesis in the regenerating newt limb and in thechick embryo limb and axial preskeleton and during developmentof the chick embryo cornea. In vitro hyaluronate, in concentrationsas low as 1 ng/ml, blocks the formation of cartilage—likeaggregates in high density stationary cultures of stage 26 chickembryo somite cells. This inhibition is prevented by hormonesknown to promote skeletal development and by adenosine 3',5'cyclicmonophosphate. An hypothesis is discussed in which (1) hyaluronate may interferewith cell interactions leading to aggregation, encapsulationby matrix and consequent immobilization and (2) hyaluronateturnover could provide a means of timing of morphogenetic eventssuch as cell migrations, allowing sufficient accumulation ofcells prior to overt differentiated tissue formation.  相似文献

Rationale and Objectives. To reduce tibio-femoral misalignment, the polyethylene bearing-component of a new knee prosthesis was allowed limited motion on the underlying metallic component. The object of the work presented here was to develop a suitable radiographic technique for quantifying the in-vivo position of the bearing. By collecting these data at discrete flexion angles, the functional operation of the prosthesis could be determined

Methods. The known geometries between landmarks on the two components were used to produce algorithms for reconstructing their spatial positions from a single radiograph. A custom-designed computer program utilized these algorithms to determine the relative translation and rotation of the polyethylene component

Results. This technique produced typical errors of 0.54 mm translation and 0.56° rotation between the polyethylene component and the underlying metallic component

Conclusions. A practical method has been developed for assessing mobile-bearing motion, in vivo. This method can be applied to other prosthetic devices, or combinations of components, once the requirement for identifiable landmarks has been addressedClinical Relevance. Skeletal and soft-tissue changes in the pathological knee may produce abnormal rotations and translations in the transverse tibial plane. This technique is intended both to validate the design philosophy of a mobile-bearing prosthesis and to provide additional data on any pathological motions, which will have implications for future prosthetic designs.  相似文献
